Election Day in New Plymouth (1890s). G.H. White. Collection of Puke Ariki (PHO2008-626).

Hina: Celebrating Taranaki Women is an acknowledgement and celebration of women. It features the stories of 11 Taranaki women from all walks of life, from Taranaki’s early history to the present. Alongside these 11 stories is a selection of women from our community who have been asked to respond with their own personal stories.

This exhibition was developed as our commemoration of the 125th anniversary of New Zealand women’s suffrage. On 19 September 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world in which all women had the right to vote in parliamentary elections.
