Self-Made Library Book - Inglewood

Do you dream of being an author or illustrator and walking into the library to see your book on the shelves?  Puke Ariki and the Community Libraries would like to give you the opportunity to have your own book selected for the library collections.

Register at your local library then pick up an exercise book from them between 27 March – 10 April. Over the school holidays write, illustrate and design to transform your exercise book into a story book that people would love to borrow.

This programme is open to school aged children. Places are limited so bookings required.

A bookmark sized flyer will be included with the book with tips and instructions:

  • Covering your book will make it more attractive to borrowers and less likely to be damaged.
  • Include a cover page.
  • Leave the last page blank for the library’s RFID tag which we use on all our library books to identify them and allow borrowing.
  • Books usually have pages in multiples of 8 due to the printing process. 24 or 32 pages are good for an illustrated story. You can pull out or paste together extra pages.
  • Be creative with your design. You can use any medium for the illustrations and have pop ups but they must fold back into the covers of the book so it remains the same size. If you use paint or glue it must be completely dry before submission.
  • Books need to be submitted back to your library by 23 April this is the final day books will be accepted.
  • All books will be considered for the library collections subject to our selection criteria which include having an interesting story that other people would like to read, the story and illustrations are finished, the subject is suitable for a junior audience and the book is securely made with no loose pages or pieces.

You will be advised by 28 April if your book has been selected to be a library book.
