Taranaki Self-love Brooch
For recognising your own wholeness and worth.
The Taranaki Self-love Brooch is made from mirrored perspex, sterling silver, steel and paint.
Developing the Award
Jewellers Sam Kelly and Jennifer Laracy held workshops at Puke Ariki and throughout Taranaki to find out what values are important to us today. They invited locals to create their own awards for people who deserve to be honoured, and through the stories that were shared came up with the top 10 values for our region. Inspired by heritage objects in the Puke Ariki collection and designs from the community they then created 10 new awards, including the Self-love Brooch.

Sketches
Putting ideas onto paper helps the artists decide how to present their ideas and figure out the best type of materials to use.
Self-love Superstar
Sam Kelly and Jennifer Laracy selected people from the community who represent each value to be photographed for the Redecorating Taranaki exhibition. The Self-Love Brooch is worn by Taranaki artist and wellbeing advocate Paul Rangiwahia, whose artwork Mental W.O.F. inspires people to take care of their mental health.
