Taranaki Diversity Brooch
For the art of welcome and celebrating the colour and vibrancy others bring
The Taranaki Diversity Brooch is made from sterling silver, Swarovski crystals, fabric and resin
Developing the Award
Jewellers Sam Kelly and Jennifer Laracy held workshops at Puke Ariki and throughout Taranaki to find out what values are important to us today. They invited locals to create their own awards for people who deserve to be honoured, and through the stories that were shared came up with the top 10 values for our region. Inspired by heritage objects in the Puke Ariki collection and designs from the community they then created 10 new awards, including the Diversity Brooch.

Putting ideas onto paper helps the artists decide how to present their ideas and figure out the best type of materials to use.
Our Diversity Champion
Sam Kelly and Jennifer Laracy selected people from the community who represent each value to be photographed for the Redecorating Taranaki exhibition. The Diversity Brooch is worn by Jeff Fong, baker and co-owner of New Plymouth’s Billow Bakery.
