Question How do taonga pūoro connect people, stories, and the natural world through sound?

Immerse your students in the rich traditions of Māori music with this interactive learning programme. Taonga pūoro are more than instruments—they are storytellers, deeply connected to the natural world and Māori heritage.

During this session, ākonga will explore our taonga pūoro collection, discovering their meanings, materials, and cultural significance. They’ll also visit Te Takapou Whāriki exhibition to experience the taonga up close and understand their role in preserving stories and identity.

The highlight? Students will collaborate to compose an orchestral piece using traditional instruments such as pūkāea, pūtātara, kōauau, pūrerehua, kōhatu, porotiti, and pūtōrino.

This programme blends history, music, and creativity offering a rich and holistic learning opportunity.
