Available 28 April – 25 June 2025
What is Puanga?
What does Puanga mean to the people of Taranaki?
Why do some iwi look for Puanga rather than Matariki?
Come and join us to celebrate the coming Māori New Year here at Puke Ariki Museum and Community Libraries and Govett-Brewster Gallery.
Every year as winter draws close, Puanga, or Rigel, features in the sky just before Matariki appears. For the tribes of Whanganui and Taranaki, Puanga is recognised as a precursor to Matariki. Puanga is now known to many tribes as the star to celebrate our New Year.
We are offering a range of learning experiences to celebrate our Māori New Year. These include storytelling: and a ‘meet the author’ opportunity, a community arts collaboration, sand art and Māori astronomy sessions.
