Art of the Good Family
Step into the footsteps of a botanical legacy, where the past and present bloom in unison.
Join Taranaki florist Sarah Good as she follows the footsteps of her relative, botanical artist Fanny Bertha Good (1860-1950), exploring the same remnant of native bush where Fanny foraged over 100 years ago. While multiple generations separate these two artists, they share a bond through their love of the colours, shapes and textures found in nature.
Fanny captured many of our endemic plant species through her expressive oil paintings, while Sarah’s re-imaginings of each painting draw from flowers more commonly found in gardens and on roadsides, along with the native bush still standing at the family farm in Ōeo.
Arranged and photographed against specially painted backdrops, each image not only reflects the form and spirit of Fanny’s paintings but also showcases Sarah’s bold, contemporary style. The vibrant compositions blend lush foliage with carefully curated blooms, creating dynamic and visually harmonious pieces.
Standing before each large-scale photograph feels like stepping into a beautiful, immersive garden. This experience pays tribute to Sarah’s ancestor while celebrating the enduring joy and emotional resonance of
flowers in art and life. Each piece invites viewers to immerse themselves in the timeless beauty of nature, reimagined through a modern artistic lens.
This exhibition was developed by Puke Ariki in collaboration with Sarah Good to complement the acclaimed 2023 exhibition State of Nature: Picturing the Silent Forest. The Good Flower offers a fresh perspective
that honours historical legacy while engaging contemporary audiences. This collaborative effort celebrates the connection between nature and artistic expression.
