Rau Te Tai Ākina
Parininihi ki Waitōtara (PKW) was established in 1976 to manage whenua retained by Taranaki Māori under the West Coast Settlement Reserves, strengthen Māori stewardship of those lands, and grow them for future generations.
On its 50th anniversary, PKW has created this exhibition to explore the legacy of raupatu (Māori land confiscation) and perpetual leasing that gave rise to PKW and remains woven through Taranaki’s landscape.
Through historical records, toi, and lived experience, the exhibition invites all who call Taranaki home to understand this legacy and reflect on who has benefited from it.
The name Rau Te Tai Ākina is from a ngeri (short haka) of the early 1900s, born from the Kotahitanga movement and the Taranaki Land League. These movements advocated for Māori unity and resistance to land confiscation.
