Objects available for loan

These museum objects are available for loan to Taranaki schools, free of charge.

Butterflies: The glass case allows students to get up close to identify the unique and colourful elements of the butterfly.  There are several wooden butterfly cases available for loan. We recommend this item if you are visiting us for the Beauty and the Beast 2012 programme. Click the image to book! Insects: This glass case features a variety of insect species, including beetles, moths and dragonflies.  Students can identify the types and characteristics of these insects, and recognise the differences and similarities between species. Click the image to book! Wharenui: The Wharenui is central to community life on a Marae. This building represents ancestors and their stories which are passed down to future generations. There are several wooden kitset wharenui available for loan. As they construct the wharenui, students will identify the parts of the building, understand what each part represents, and learn more about the importance of the wharenui on the marae. Click image to book! Taranaki Daily News – Tuesday May 8, 1945: A large laminated copy of “New Zealand’s Greatest Provincial Daily” newspaper, the Taranaki Daily News.  Dated May 8 1945, the paper details the latest news, entertainment and businesses in Taranaki during this war time period. Click image to book!
 Word on a Wire: This resource pack includes an excellent example of an early Bakelite wall telephone (c.1940s) with rotary dial, and several A4 and A3 colour posters with supporting information. Click the image to book!  Braille Books: The Braille system, created in 1824, is a system of reading and writing using embossed or raised dots. These Braille books are excellent examples for students of how blind and partially sighted people read and write. This resource was previously used during the Our Stories exhibition.
