Taranaki Punch

Published by Garland William Woon.

Taranaki Punch was published 16 times between October 1860 and August 1861. The magazine gives a unique insight into the frustration and disenchantment of local settlers over the Government and military’s handling of the First Taranaki War.

Named in honour of its British counterpart, the Taranaki version was drawn and written by Henry Freer Rawson and published by Taranaki Herald owner Garland William Woon.   It contains references to Māori, the military and New Plymouth’s inhabitants that are frequently racist, defamatory and slanderous by today’s standards.
