Lynley Dodd’s name is synonymous with that unkempt dog, Hairy Maclary.
He’s an international icon, a megastar amongst pooches. He’s been mentioned on Coronation Street and Tony Blair once read him aloud on BBC television. Not bad for a backstreet mongrel.
But what do you know about his creator, the quiet and humble Tauranga illustrator and author Dame Lynley Dodd? Find out in this exhibition showcasing her life’s works – to date.
Dodd began her career in children’s books in 1973. Ten years later, Dodd produced the first in the series of books starring the infamous Hairy Maclary, which has gone on to warm the hearts of children worldwide. Since then, much of Dodd’s work has revolved around the cheeky black pup and his sidekicks. Stories featuring Hairy Maclary, Slinki Malinki and friends have won the New Zealand Children’s Picture Book of the Year Award four times.
