bringing it home

17 April – 26 July 2015
Lower Ground Floor, Puke Ariki Museum

This is their story. The daughters. The sons. The crippled. The heroes. The mothers. The fathers. The children. The leaders. The doubters. The heartbroken. The people of Taranaki.

Thousands of men left their farms, jobs and families in Taranaki to serve in the war. They left to see the world, they left to fight alongside their mates, for their King, their country, and their families. Many left to die.

This exhibition tells of a province at war. The courage, the heartbreak, the humour and triumph of people at home and in battle. It casts new light on well-known heroes and uncovers little known stories. It traces the legacy of the war, showing how this global conflict touched local districts, communities, and whānau around the mountain.

This is their story. This is your story.

bringing home the stories

help the research

Can you help bring home some of Taranaki's World War One stories? Puke Ariki's researchers are looking for help in piecing together some of the tales of that time - maybe you hold the key ?
